"Speed Geeking" with Groundwire

Wednesday March 24th, I will be presenting High Country News' 40th Anniversary site at Groundwire's 2nd annual Speed Geek Happy Hour over at their headquarters in downtown Seattle. If you are lucky enough to be attending please make sure to say hello. The event will feature 6 to 8 different presenters, those attending will rotate to a new presenter at the ring of a cowbell. Meaning each presenter will end up performing her/his demonstration 7-9 times. Luckily, Groundwire also plans to debut their new signature drink, The Live Wire.

In the coming days I will post a screencast based on my five minute presentation at the event, as, when all is said and done I will be well practiced.

High Country News 40th Anniversary Site Launched!

About the site
Founded in 1970 High Country News wanted to use 2010 to celebrate their 40th anniversary and use the milestone as an opportunity to engage with readers and fundraise. The site was designed to develop more interaction with regular site visitors and as part of their "FUNdraising" campaign. HCN wanted the site to feature a distinctive look and feel from hcn.org primary (hcn.org was developed for Plone by Groundwire and designed by Your's Truly) but still utilize many of the features already in place on the main site.

The 40th Anniversary site features a number of completely new custom elements developed for Plone including:

  • Parties - With a map for users to find parties to attend and a party submission form for enterprising readers to host their own.
  • Contests - The site will feature a number of fun photo and essay contests—the first of which was a big hit—throughout the year. Users can easily browse through entries and vote for their favorites and of course submit their own. The contest mechanics allow editors to easily set the dates that the contest will run, the backend handles automatically selecting the winning entry and closing the contest.
  • Sponsors - A new sponsors section was added which allows editors to easily add sponsors and select featured sponsors to list on each page.
